Camera rolling, slate, action…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited. We're jumping ahead a few paragraphs.

She left the full bag beside the couch and strode over to the projector intent on rewinding the reel so she could put it away. Her father had a real passion for film, despite the fact it wasn't all that popular in the 90s when video tape recorders were all the rage. Of course, her father owned a camcorder as well and those videotapes were stored in the library upstairs. His bandmates told her a few stories about her father's dream to be a film director. He used to drive them batty as he followed them around and recorded their every move.

She spotted an empty tin on the edge of the desk and there were other tins stacked on the desk too. It appeared her mother had worked through quite a few reels before ending up with the one loaded on the projector. She reached for reel but as her fingers touched it, the projector turned on with a blast of air that sounded similar to hairdryer and the tick-tick-tick of the film reel added to the machine's antiquated music. Her brows drew together as she stared at the faulty machine in surprise. She reached for the switch to turn it off, but a child's giggle drew her attention and she glanced at the wall where the past had come alive in muted colors and grainy lines.

Can you guess who is the child starring in the home film?

Unofficial Blurb for End of the Road

Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and is trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he's convinced it had to be murder despite the fact he can't recall what happened in his last moments of life. Cecilia seeks the help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lar's rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.

  1. Oooh, that projector is eerie. Love the description of her father’s love of film–gives lots of insight into his character.

  2. Very spooky. I still say paranormal and not faulty. Of course I’ve had my own experience with something turning on when no one was near it, so I may be a bit biased. πŸ˜‰

  3. She sees herself in happier times and then, toward the end, mother intervenes to wreck the fantasy. Bubble bursts once again for the adult self.
You led us down a path,open-ended for the reader to fill in. Good job, Karen.

  4. Just a tad creepy with the projector turning on by itself. What will she see? Great snippet.
