Chapter 4 #2

Set up: Darrien begins his tale, in hopes Calli will believe him.

He could not change her mind on what she believed, but perhaps if he told her the story, their story, she would at least consider his side. "Our love was thwarted by Isa, a jealous woman who believed I cared for her when I had not given her such attention."

"I just bet," she murmured.

"I love you, Callista," he said and could not keep the hurt from his voice. "My love is true and always has been, but you mock it." For a moment, their eyes met and maybe she witnessed the truth in his gaze for she lost her hostile stance.

"I'm sorry," she told him and he believed she meant it. "I have no right to belittle your feelings for someone you care about."

***********************************************************

Poor Darrien, she doesn't remember any of it.

Some Treasures are Priceless…

A long time ago, a Gryphon shifter’s duty was to guard and protect the people of the tribes, but Darrien Andros failed to keep his human wife safe from harm. Cursed for the crime, he must guard everything in the Museum of Cursed Antiquities forever, never to truly live and never to die. Centuries have passed, but when he encounters a thief, who uncannily resembles his dead wife, he is convinced he has a second chance.

Calli Angelis is hired to steal Hecate's Stone from the Museum, believing she would be returning it to its rightful owner. She never really trusted the person who hired her and now Darrien makes her doubt her motives, too. He also has her questioning the possibility of reincarnation when the attraction between them ignites into something she can no longer ignore.

As the two work together to unravel the mysteries behind the stone, it becomes apparent an old and dangerous enemy from Darrien’s past is determined to have history repeat itself.

  1. Love what he says and the look in his eyes when he says it.

Congrats. on the story collection news!

  2. Hard to accept you might be the reincarnation of a woman he still loves instead of a woman he currently cares for. Great book.

  3. Congratulations on the P&E poll! That’s great, Karen!

Her snark makes sense—he’s asking her to believe the impossible—but she’s still empathetic. She’s a good character. 🙂

  4. He made a point but not really at the right place. Maybe if he wasn’t talking about them that would have worked a bit better. I wonder how much of Callista is still in her.

  5. This must be so difficult for Darrien!! Callista apologized to him, despite how crazy this all must sound, showing that even with no memory of his tale, he can get through to her on other levels. Nice snippet!

  6. Nice and emotional. I like how she doesn’t want to disrespect him, but, on the other hand, that doesn’t help her much in figuring out what to do with the information he provided. That’s a good ground for interesting conflicts.
