A Vision or Not? Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Keep in mind Heart and Soul is a WIP.

This is in Rowan's POV. Rowan peaked under her car and found absolutely nothing there.

She stood and hurried to the road again. She ran a hand through her hair as her gaze searched the area for any sign of movement, any sign of life. The tree leaves rustled as if whispering amongst themselves and judging her. She whirled around and trudged back to her car and slipped inside. She went through the motions of starting the car but sat there unable to put it in reverse. Her hands shook as her fingers grabbed for the purse that had slid to the floor. With a few tries, she finally pulled out the pill bottle prescribed by her doctor and managed to open the lid and drop a pill into her palm. Instead of popping it in her mouth, she stared at it. She'd been off her antipsychotic medication for months. The dreams were more vivid, revealing Haley Roses' life...her life... in detail.

(This is the end of 10 sentences. for Weekend Warriors. Continue for Snippet Sunday 300 words or less, if you wish. :))

She fingered the pill then pursed her lips as she placed it back inside the bottle. She was too close to finding out the answers. She wouldn't go back now, and she wouldn't let the medication shadow the truth.

She chewed on her lower lip. What if she were crazy? What if the idea that she lived before was all a psychotic episode? No one wanted to believe they were unhinged. "You found the place where it all began," she murmured. Haley Rose had performed at the Heart and Soul when it had been the Suede Shoes. Maverick even had a photo of the woman on his wall. "I'm not nuts." She took a deep breath and let it out again in a whoosh. "I'm not." She put the car in gear and backed up. If she kept saying the words maybe she would believe them.

About Heart and Soul...

80s rock star, Haley Rose went missing without a trace on October 31 1988 and was eventually presumed dead. Three decades later, a thirty-year old woman, Rowan Beckett recalls things only Haley Rose would know and she can belt out songs in the same fashion as the missing 80s star. However, Rowan couldn't be the missing rock star since the woman would now be in her fifties. Could Haley Rose have came back reincarnated as Rowan Beckett?

  1. Poor girl, she has quite a lot to contend with, doesn’t she? But I like the plot complexity and the questions it raises for the reader, because I for one want to believe her too. That it’s not all in her head, but real. Minor nit – I know this is just a WIP but the disembodied hand got a little distracting in the first part of the snippet. Something for the editing cycle LOL. Loving the story!

  2. OK, so she’s made the connection with Haley. I would certainly be confused as all heck, worried about going mad, but determined to get to the bottom of it. Good job!

  3. I’m not sure it’s a good idea for her to leave herself so vulnerable out in the middle of nowhere. Especially when no one knows she’s there. Intriguing!

  4. This answers a question I’ve had for a awhile: does she know about Haley or does she just know she’s experiencing something strange.

In my experience with people undergoing psychotic episodes (unfortunately more extensive than I’d ever wish), they never question whether they’re crazy. The very question shows she’s still somewhat grounded.

  5. I think it sounds very real, the kinds of thoughts she is having. I bet almost all of us would be thinking similar thoughts if we were in her situation. Excellent snippet, Karen!

  6. The tree leaves rustled as if whispering amongst themselves and judging her. I wish I had written that. I love it. Well done excerpt.
