Rone-Badge-Finalist Silver-2016Welcome to Snippet Sunday.

Enjoy a snippet from last week: Flowers and Fangs, Chapter 5 #1

This week's snippet more from Flowers and Fangs, which is a RONE Finalist for best New Adult tale! Thank you so much to those who voted. This couldn't have happened without you. Now for the second round–the judges will read the stories. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Chapter 5. This is in Sloane's POV.

Quick update from last week: Derek has tackled Sloane to the ground in her backyard, trying to keep her from escaping. He claims vampires are real, but she believes he's nuts. She hasn't quite grasped he might be telling the truth, and for good reasons. He told her he thinks she might turn into one of those fiends. Not a great reason to trust him when he's a hunter who stakes and dusts such creatures. Then to make matters worse, Derek's brothers show and they are calling to him. Derek clasps a hand over Sloane's mouth to silence her. If the brothers find them, Sloane is a good as dead.

At this close range, his rugged face half lit by moonlight proved almost too beautiful to be on a face of a madman. She pursed her lips realizing how stupid her reasoning sounded because let's face it, if potential killers had crazy tattooed on their forehead, they wouldn't have any murderers and rapist roaming the streets. The police could just arrest them on sight. Then she realized what the man standing at her backdoor had said and her eyes narrowed. The madman was named Derek. Her gaze riveted to him, taking in every feature with knowing dread.  The truth hit her hard and her breath solidified in her chest. Older and more muscular…but it was Derek Hayes. He'd been the bad boy, the one not afraid to do as he pleased, but he'd also been kind, and he stood up to bullies, protected the underdog.

Lad growled, but not at Derek who held her captive, but at the newcomer.

Sloane now realizes she knows Derek. Will this make her trust him? Would you trust someone you once dated if he told you vampires were real?

  1. How will Sloane react now that she recognizes Derek? Love the tension being created here, the conflict of his duty and the monster she might be. Good luck in your second round of judging!

  2. Hmmm…not sure if I’d trust him. Maybe, right up until he said that vampires are real. 🙂 Good scene–excellent job, as ever, of painting it for the reader.

Right now, we’re having trouble with your sign-up on the linky list. It’s a linky-tools issue, nothing you’ve done. We’re trying to figure out why clicking on the list leads to an “error 404 page not found”. Because, well obviously, it’s here. When I’m logged into linkytools, on the editing page, if I click on your link, it leads me straight to this page. But on the wewriwa.com page, it’s an error 404. Working on it. 🙂

  3. I love her memories of him. I’m curious as to why Lad is growling at his brother instead of him, and I’m REALLY curious as to how Derek is going to explain this.

  4. She has mixed memories of him from her past, he was a bad boy so could she trust he is telling the truth… on the other hand he was protective and kind so she shouldn’t fear him. What a perplexing situation! I say trust Lad, animals have an innate way of reading true natures.

  5. I’m also glad she recognized him–and that he stood up to the bullies. Great snippet!

  6. i liked finding out more about him … and i’d say trust the dog. they usually have a good instinct.

  7. Glad to know she recognized him! Can’t wait to see what happens next, especially with Lad freaking out about someone else approaching… 🙂

  8. Oh this could prove very interesting now that she’s recognized him! I wonder if she’ll come to trust him or not, and I wonder if they can stay hidden from his brother now that Lad is growling. Love the bit about tattooing crazy on murderers foreheads, that would be quite helpful in society! LOL.
