Comfort before indulging… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia found her father's journal. Should she read it or not?

Skipped a few sentences for this snippet...

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She glanced at the book again as she chewed on her lower lip in thought, then murmured, "Read it and return it." There was no sense in letting her mother know she stumbled upon the book.

She placed the journal on the coffee table intent on making herself a cup of tea before she indulged in reading her father's words. She headed to the kitchen located down the hall from the study. Chefs around the world would be envious of her mother's kitchen with its large countertops and open space to maneuver. The design also included Dutch ovens, two microwaves, plenty of pots and pans to choose from, top of the line knives for chopping and slicing, and three cutting boards were an added bonus to the setup.

Her gaze traveled over the pristine stovetop and counters, making it obvious no one had taken advantage of the cooking space in quite some time. She headed to the walk-in pantry and took note of the empty shelves where can-foods, spices, and other cooking items should have been stacked. To her left though the shelves were decorated with what she craved. Her mother may not have anything in the house deemed edible, but the woman always had tea in her cupboard.

No wonder her mother has kept her figure. lol  Love to hear your feedback.

Saint or Sinner? End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia reads a disturbing note in her father's journal:  I don't fear the reaper. It's the humans with death in their eyes that scare me shitless. If you're reading this, death found me when my back was turned.

Skipped a few sentences for this snippet...

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She didn't know if they were words he'd written for a song or if he'd written them when he'd been paranoid that someone was following him. Either way, the words chilled her and at the same time, they made her more curious than ever. These were her father's words, his thoughts, and his dreams jotted down on paper. She had a part of him she otherwise would never have had any other way since he died before she could really know him. The media made him seem like an untouchable force to be admired and his bandmates only told her the good things–well mostly the good things. Depended on how much they had to drink. Her father had a reputation as being a rabble rouser and one didn't achieve such a status by being wholesome. He'd been a few fights, drank like he'd been deprived liquids, drugs were like candy to him; so popping pills were probably a part of his staple diet.

For a long time, she'd been angry with him for dying, but then she realized it hadn't been entirely the reason for her anger. It pissed her off that people acted as if they knew him, especially the media and his fans...when all she had were hazy memories and the distorted ones her mother chose to share with her, painting her father as a saint.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She may find out who the real man is by reading the journal. Hopefully, she won't be disappointed.

Love to hear your feedback.

A Premonition … End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia found her father's journal hidden beneath a floorboard and placed it on the desk in hopes of reading it later. She turned away but a sound startled her and she whirled around in surprise.

The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She found the journal had fallen and lay at her feet, opened to a page where a slip a paper rested within the crease. She leaned down and reached for the note and unfolded it. The first lines seemed to jump out at her, making her feel dizzy and queasy as if she'd indulged in her mother's stash. "What the hell?" She stood and read the lines again.

I don't fear the reaper. It's the humans with death in their eyes that scare me shitless. If you're reading this, death found me when my back was turned.

**********************************************************************************************************************

That's all for now. Only 8 sentences, but thought it was a good place to end this snippet. 🙂  So... was this a premonition or brooding lyrics to one of her dad's songs. He did jot down song lyrics in the journal? What do you think?

Love to hear your feedback.

Just a tad curious… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Last week recap: Cecilia found her father's journal hidden beneath a floorboard. She's referring to her father in this first sentence of the snippet. Before her father died, his bandmates claimed he was paranoid.

The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

He even accused her mother of having someone follow him. It was why at first the authorities believed her father's accident had been a suicide, that he'd been unstable.

She stared at the book and wondered what she should do with it. Give it to her mother?

She stood, placed the last guitar in its place and closed the closet door. She glanced at the book in her hand. She'd be lying if she weren't just a tad curious to know what her father had written. Maybe after she read it and made sure there wasn't anything in it that would upset her mother, she'd give it to her. God knew her mother didn't need anything else to obsess about in regards to her father.

She placed the journal on the desk but as she turned a loud slap against the wood floor had her whirling back with a gasp.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Would you give the journal to Cecilia's mother?

Love to hear your feedback.

Written Words… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Last week recap: Cecilia found a journal beneath the floorboards and is wondering why it was hidden and who it belongs to.

Now for the snippet.

The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She slowly flipped through the pages once more and paused to read a passage, then another. The aged worn sheets were filled with bold print and some pages were scrawled in handwriting.

One scribbled laden note read: Talk to Fritz about changing a line on the second stanza of Be it Known. The words aren't clicking with me. Got something else in mind.

There was another note where he jotted down a reminder to buy Phoebe a present for their anniversary. This had to be her father's journal. "But why would you hide it away?" she murmured to herself. It didn't make any sense, but then maybe it did. Fritz said her father had been paranoid the last months before his death.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Do you think her father hid the journal or someone else?

Love to hear your feedback.

Hidden treasures…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Last week recap: Cecilia knocked down the guitars in the walk-in closet and was putting them back in order when she realized a floorboard had come loose. She could see something hidden beneath it.

Now for the snippet.

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She slipped out her phone from her pocket of her jeans and used the flashlight to see what had been secreted away beneath the floorboards before she stuck her hand down there to retrieve it. Creepy crawly things could be lurking beneath there for all she knew. However, a second later all thoughts of spiders and other creatures had slipped her mind once she could identify the object as a book. Her fingers curled around the binding and snatched it from its hiding place.

She sat down crossed legged and brushed the dusty film away from the front cover before she flipped through the pages to glance at the contents, which appeared to be handwritten in blue ink. She was about to flip through it again at a slower pace when a photograph fell out from its confines and landed face down beside her knee. She reached for it and turned it over. A chubby-cheeked and all eyes toddler stared back at her and it took her a second more to realize she stared at a photograph of herself. She was probably about two years old here. Her gaze riveted to the book again.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Could this be her father's journal? What do you think?

Love to hear your feedback.

Something new, something old, something hidden…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Cecilia cleaned up the study her bereaved mother left in shambles. Her mother had been watching old films of her rock-star father who died 23 years ago. She stacked the films away in canisters, intent on putting them away in the walk-in closet but something else caught her eye. Now for the snippet.

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Five guitars were situated on the floor of the closet, upright and leaning against the wall for support. On impulse, she reached for the candy-apple-red electric guitar with a skull painted on the base.

She could play the piano, but she never mastered the guitar, which now she regretted since Billy Pitts – who played the electric guitar for the Silent Plaids and was one of the best of the best – had offered to teach her, but she rebelled against the idea since it was her father's instrument of choice. It was a stupid rebellion against him for dying and leaving her as if he had a choice, but she had a stubborn streak and it plagued her more times than not; just another trait she inherited from her father or so her mother told her on many occasions.

Her fingers lightly caressed the skull painted white and black before she returned the instrument to it resting place, but it tilted and before she could right it once more, it fell against the guitar standing next to it, then the next went and the next as if the instruments were imitating the domino effect for her benefit. She cringed and hoped she hadn't caused any damage for her carelessness. She sat down on her knees to pick up the instruments and place them back in order. As she reached to place the last one down, her gaze caught sight of the floorboard in the corner sitting askew. It must have been why the guitar had fallen to the side when she'd put it down.

She reached for board and picked it up, intending set it straight, but her gaze landed on something hidden beneath the plank.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Hmm...I wonder what she found.

Loved to hear your feedback. 🙂

The Strange Escapes weekend aboard the Queen Mary was a blast. Great speakers and it was so interesting to explore the old ship. I have lots of photos to share.

Leprechaun Shenanigans @KMNbooks #stpatricksday #recipe #irishtales

Leprechaun Shenanigans

If you’re walking along a wooded path on a moonlit night in spring and hear the tapping of a tiny hammer, you might be lucky to catch a glimpse of an Irish Leprechaun.

According to legend, the leprechaun has a pot of gold hidden somewhere, and he must give up his treasure to the one who catches him. You’ll have to be quick and outsmart the elfin trickster to capture his gold. He’s a sly one, he is. He will try to fool you into looking the other way as he escapes into the forest.

There’s a story where a man made a leprechaun show him where the gold was buried. The man tied a handkerchief to the bush in order to recognize the spot again. He ran home for a shovel, but when he returned on every bush there was a red handkerchief.

What's St. Patrick's Day without soda bread. Here's a recipe for your enjoyment.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/3 cup white sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

  • 2 cups buttermilk

  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

  • 1/4 cup currants (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

  2. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and baking soda. Blend egg and buttermilk together, and add all at once to the flour mixture. Mix just until moistened. Stir in butter. Pour into prepared pan.

  3. Bake for 65 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the bread comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

Now that you have your soda bread slathered with butter and a cup of your favorite tea in your hand, an Irish tale would make the day extra magical.
