She had to hurry if she were to sneak out of the house before her father decided to drag himself out of bed. She wanted to avoid any last-minute confrontations. Her father made it perfectly clear he didn’t want her to go to New Orleans. Too bad for him. He forfeited the estate when he refused it and now the deed fell to her.

Briar scooted in quickly behind her afraid to be shut out if her dream didn’t allow her to open the door and follow. Her gaze shifted to the inscription below the stem of the rose. “Love, Loyalty and Friendship I give to thee. For now, for always thru eternity,” she murmured.

Her finger hovered over the words as an inkling of a memory flashed. She knew this saying, had read it or… someone had spoken the words to her. She placed her hand on the cool panel, but gasped and stepped back in surprise as the stained-glass warped and shifted as if being melted away.

During the winter months, they opted for taking Jack’s boat. Being a half-mermaid, the bloodline being from the Merrow clan of Ireland, the ocean’s temperament didn’t hamper her in the least, but it could prove treacherous for Jack, who was human, and the cave’s entrance proved tricky when there were calm waters, but perilous when stormy.
