Getting to know you….End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia is still trying to accept she's talking to her father's ghost. Their conversation is a bit awkward...

Now for the snippet.

***The story has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

"I knew you'd be a hot babe when you grew up–with my genes and your mother's–and damn, that didn't come out right at all, did it?"

She lifted an eyebrow at the sudden change of subject then realized this entity, this ghost, may be her father, but he was only a twenty-seven year old man when he'd died and it would seem his way of thinking had remained dormant. For him, life had stood still. He would be forever young and somehow that thought broke her heart, but for now she pushed the despair away. "Thanks?" she said more like a question, since she was unsure how to respond to his impromptu comment.

"Sorry, didn't mean to sound creepy. It's just...well, you're all grown up," he said and his voice choked even though he tried to cover it up by clearing his throat.

With all the times she'd imagined what she would say to her father if she had the chance, this conversation didn't even come close. She had others though. "Did you purposely drive your truck off the pier?" she blurted out and pointed as if he could see through the walls to where their private pier stood.

Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and has been trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he's convinced it was murder despite the fact he can't recall what happened to him in his last moments of life. Something familiar….End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia glanced at the journal that she still held in her hand. "Earlier, did you knock the journal off the desk?" She met his gaze then. "And if you did, how are you able to touch the journal but you can't touch me?"

Now for the snippet.

***The story has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

"I concentrated on moving the air around the journal so I wasn't actually touching anything." He lifted those broad shoulders of his in a shrug.

She remembered that gesture from when she was little. Something so familiar it made her eyes sting. She missed the gesture that had been so much a part of him. How had she forgotten about it until now?

"I'm not a scientist or whatever," he was still talking and she had to force herself to concentrate on his words. "I told you I don't know how this works or why." His gaze slid over her with what she thought might be appreciation.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Not ten sentences, but this was a better place to stop. The next few lines need to be together so they don't sound odd.

Love to hear your feed back. 🙂

I'm busy working on edits...

I’m baaack!… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet: Cecilia has dismissed the voice she heard, believing she dreamed that someone had spoke to her. She enters the study...

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

No more reading for her tonight. She'd put the journal in a safe place for later, and then check on her mother one more time before she headed home.

She strode over to the coffee table and leaned down to retrieve the journal, but as she straightened she caught a movement near the closet door. Her eyes widen in fear at the sight of a shadowy figure standing there. Tall, dark and foreboding and thoughts of feeling safe evaporated like a summer mist and her inner voice told her to run. However, her feet hadn't picked up on the warning in the way she'd hoped. Instead, she scrambled back and hit the edge of the coffee table and she gasped at the sudden sharp pain to her calf.

"Don't be afraid," the shadowy man told her, which he had to be friggin' crazy to think she wouldn't be, but the scream tickling her throat lodged there and her voice came out in a squeak and with nothing coherent to be named. Her heartbeat pounded in her ear and she almost missed the man's next words...almost.

"CeeCee, it's me."

False Security… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet: Cecilia heard a man's voice as she was reading her late father's journal. Only she was alone in the room and she's trying to convince herself she must have fallen asleep and dreamt she heard a voice.

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

In her dream – because what else could it have been? She heard her father's voice.

She cleaned the mug, dried it and returned it to the cupboard before she turned the lights off once more and entered the hallway to the study. She paused outside the door and stared into the living room, shadowed but not completely dark since the patio lights were on and their brilliance shaded the room in soft grays. A comfy sofa faced the large windows and the French doors. During the summer months, they used to leave those doors open and the ocean breeze would tease the senses as it filtered in and cooled the house. This part of the beach remained virtually private and very few people ever wandered down this far. The outside lights illuminated the lounge chairs and glass tables that decorated the patio, but she couldn't see beyond that point where the sand and ocean met, but she could hear the seashell chimes hanging off the wood frame and it performed softly in tune with the wind and surf. The starfish clock hanging on the wall near the doors ticked with precision as if it also wanted to join in on the melody being played.

Her lips curved as she recalled the familiar sounds from her youth and she suddenly felt calmer...safer.

The journal’s message… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia makes a cup of tea before she settles down to read her father's journal and find out what secrets he left behind. Remember the eerie message her father had written: "I don't fear the reaper. It's the humans with death in their eyes that scare me shitless. If you're reading this, death found me when my back was turned."

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Once it was brewed, she headed back to the study. Seemed only appropriate to read the journal in there, where her father could have possibly sat at the desk and jotted down his thoughts on those pages she was about to read. She placed the tea on the coffee table as she sat down on the edge of the sofa. Then frowned as she stared at the journal sitting there and opened to the eerie passage her father had written. She didn't remember leaving the journal open when she placed it on the coffee table. She turned in her seat and glanced around the room as if she'd find someone in there but of course she was alone. She stared at the journal again before she finally shook her head for feeling anything other than curious. She must have left the book open. It was the only explanation she was willing to accept. She snatched it up and settled back in her seat and started reading from the first page.

Comfort before indulging… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia found her father's journal. Should she read it or not?

Skipped a few sentences for this snippet...

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She glanced at the book again as she chewed on her lower lip in thought, then murmured, "Read it and return it." There was no sense in letting her mother know she stumbled upon the book.

She placed the journal on the coffee table intent on making herself a cup of tea before she indulged in reading her father's words. She headed to the kitchen located down the hall from the study. Chefs around the world would be envious of her mother's kitchen with its large countertops and open space to maneuver. The design also included Dutch ovens, two microwaves, plenty of pots and pans to choose from, top of the line knives for chopping and slicing, and three cutting boards were an added bonus to the setup.

Her gaze traveled over the pristine stovetop and counters, making it obvious no one had taken advantage of the cooking space in quite some time. She headed to the walk-in pantry and took note of the empty shelves where can-foods, spices, and other cooking items should have been stacked. To her left though the shelves were decorated with what she craved. Her mother may not have anything in the house deemed edible, but the woman always had tea in her cupboard.

**********************************************************************************************************************

No wonder her mother has kept her figure. lol  Love to hear your feedback.

Saint or Sinner? End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia reads a disturbing note in her father's journal:  I don't fear the reaper. It's the humans with death in their eyes that scare me shitless. If you're reading this, death found me when my back was turned.

Skipped a few sentences for this snippet...

***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She didn't know if they were words he'd written for a song or if he'd written them when he'd been paranoid that someone was following him. Either way, the words chilled her and at the same time, they made her more curious than ever. These were her father's words, his thoughts, and his dreams jotted down on paper. She had a part of him she otherwise would never have had any other way since he died before she could really know him. The media made him seem like an untouchable force to be admired and his bandmates only told her the good things–well mostly the good things. Depended on how much they had to drink. Her father had a reputation as being a rabble rouser and one didn't achieve such a status by being wholesome. He'd been a few fights, drank like he'd been deprived liquids, drugs were like candy to him; so popping pills were probably a part of his staple diet.

For a long time, she'd been angry with him for dying, but then she realized it hadn't been entirely the reason for her anger. It pissed her off that people acted as if they knew him, especially the media and his fans...when all she had were hazy memories and the distorted ones her mother chose to share with her, painting her father as a saint.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She may find out who the real man is by reading the journal. Hopefully, she won't be disappointed.

Love to hear your feedback.

A Premonition … End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Recap from last week's snippet: Cecilia found her father's journal hidden beneath a floorboard and placed it on the desk in hopes of reading it later. She turned away but a sound startled her and she whirled around in surprise.

The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She found the journal had fallen and lay at her feet, opened to a page where a slip a paper rested within the crease. She leaned down and reached for the note and unfolded it. The first lines seemed to jump out at her, making her feel dizzy and queasy as if she'd indulged in her mother's stash. "What the hell?" She stood and read the lines again.

I don't fear the reaper. It's the humans with death in their eyes that scare me shitless. If you're reading this, death found me when my back was turned.

**********************************************************************************************************************

That's all for now. Only 8 sentences, but thought it was a good place to end this snippet. 🙂  So... was this a premonition or brooding lyrics to one of her dad's songs. He did jot down song lyrics in the journal? What do you think?

Love to hear your feedback.
