Something new, something old, something hidden…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

Cecilia cleaned up the study her bereaved mother left in shambles. Her mother had been watching old films of her rock-star father who died 23 years ago. She stacked the films away in canisters, intent on putting them away in the walk-in closet but something else caught her eye. Now for the snippet.

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Five guitars were situated on the floor of the closet, upright and leaning against the wall for support. On impulse, she reached for the candy-apple-red electric guitar with a skull painted on the base.

She could play the piano, but she never mastered the guitar, which now she regretted since Billy Pitts – who played the electric guitar for the Silent Plaids and was one of the best of the best – had offered to teach her, but she rebelled against the idea since it was her father's instrument of choice. It was a stupid rebellion against him for dying and leaving her as if he had a choice, but she had a stubborn streak and it plagued her more times than not; just another trait she inherited from her father or so her mother told her on many occasions.

Her fingers lightly caressed the skull painted white and black before she returned the instrument to it resting place, but it tilted and before she could right it once more, it fell against the guitar standing next to it, then the next went and the next as if the instruments were imitating the domino effect for her benefit. She cringed and hoped she hadn't caused any damage for her carelessness. She sat down on her knees to pick up the instruments and place them back in order. As she reached to place the last one down, her gaze caught sight of the floorboard in the corner sitting askew. It must have been why the guitar had fallen to the side when she'd put it down.

She reached for board and picked it up, intending set it straight, but her gaze landed on something hidden beneath the plank.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Hmm...I wonder what she found.

Loved to hear your feedback. 🙂

The Strange Escapes weekend aboard the Queen Mary was a blast. Great speakers and it was so interesting to explore the old ship. I have lots of photos to share.

Unofficial Blurb for End of the Road

Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and is trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he's convinced it had to be murder despite the fact he can't recall what happened in his last moments of life. Cecilia seeks the help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lar's rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.

Time stood still…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Tears stung her eyes at hearing her father's voice, seeing him and witnessing how he treated her with such loving care. Realizing how this trip down memory lane had affected her, she angrily flipped the switch on the projector to the off position, ending the tender moment and drenching the room in silence.

For a moment she just stood there as if the projector would again turn itself and resume where the film had left off. It didn't and she felt pretty stupid thinking it would. She once again concentrated on the job of rewinding the tape and once finished, she removed the reel and packed it in its container before stacking it on top of the other cases. She picked them up then put them back down again as she realized she didn't know where her mother stored the reels. It wasn't as if she allowed her to see them. These could have been memories for her too, but instead, her mother hoarded the memory of Lars Gunner as if she feared sharing him with anyone would make her face the fact he was never coming home.

She looked around the room, taking it in all at once. Books were lined on a shelf next to an old TV with an antenna and she doubted the thing even worked, but it couldn't be thrown out; it was her father's after all and everything in this room had been his.

**********************************************************************************************************************

Her mother should have shared the memories with her, don't you think?

Loved to hear your feedback. 🙂

Exciting news! Next week I'm attending a Strange Escapes weekend aboard the Queen Mary. Every Strange Escapes event features in-depth investigation of a haunted location in the United States. Plus, lectures from paranormal notables, television personalities, authors and more. I'll have to share my adventure with you all.

Camera rolling, slate, action…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited. We're jumping ahead a few paragraphs.

**********************************************************************************************************************

She left the full bag beside the couch and strode over to the projector intent on rewinding the reel so she could put it away. Her father had a real passion for film, despite the fact it wasn't all that popular in the 90s when video tape recorders were all the rage. Of course, her father owned a camcorder as well and those videotapes were stored in the library upstairs. His bandmates told her a few stories about her father's dream to be a film director. He used to drive them batty as he followed them around and recorded their every move.

She spotted an empty tin on the edge of the desk and there were other tins stacked on the desk too. It appeared her mother had worked through quite a few reels before ending up with the one loaded on the projector. She reached for reel but as her fingers touched it, the projector turned on with a blast of air that sounded similar to hairdryer and the tick-tick-tick of the film reel added to the machine's antiquated music. Her brows drew together as she stared at the faulty machine in surprise. She reached for the switch to turn it off, but a child's giggle drew her attention and she glanced at the wall where the past had come alive in muted colors and grainy lines.
**********************************************************************************************************************

Can you guess who is the child starring in the home film?

Do you remember what you said? End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter One (Don't Fear) The Reaper Snippet 8.  Last week snippet is here.

Lars Gunner, rock star, and Cecilia's father died 23 years ago. Her mother has never gotten over losing him. They're in Lar's study that is more like a shrine filled with items he owned in life. Phoebe (Cecilia's mother is speaking first). This is Cecilia's POV.

This story is a WIP. The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited. Did a few creative puctuation to end at a good spot. 🙂

**********************************************************************************************************************

She moved from her grip and walked over to the black road case, which had wheels and a handle to make transporting equipment, music sheets, and other such items from place to place that much easier. Her father had taken this one with him on the road since his first concert when singing for his supper hadn't been a joke but a reality to when the band had finally made it big and gourmet banquets were set out for them as if they were kings. It was like having a lucky sock or coin, but his lucky item just happened to be a beat up old roadie box. Her mother had one too, but hers had been custom made with leopard fur and rhinestones.

Her mother's hand slid over the black box, pausing over the dent in one corner as if that particular dent held a fond memory. "Right after your father died, you would come in here and stare at this beat up old thing and I would ask you what you were doing," she said and glanced over her shoulder at her. "Do you remember what you said?"

She shook her head.

"You would say: Daddy's playing his guitar and singing to me." Her mother pulled her wrap closer around her as if for warmth and said, "You were always his little girl and even in death, you loved him more than me."

Do we have a deal?…. Two Worlds Collided @KMNbooks #timetravel #8sunday #snippetsunday

two-worlds-collided_newlook3Welcome to Snippet Sunday! This is a snippet from Two Worlds Collided. Only 99¢ for a short time. I really loved Evie and Bellamy's story. I hope you will too.

LOOKING FOR last week's SNIPPET from Chapter Three: Snippet #1

Now for Chapter 3  - Building Bridges Snippet #2

About this snippet: We're skipping ahead a few paragraphs.

Set up for this snippet: Bellamy shows up at Evie's room with a purpose. Evie figures out his ploy that he's trying to make her feel uncomfortable enough to want to quit, but she calls him on it. She tells him she's not leaving. She was hired to do a job and she is going to do it.

Now for the snippet. There are some tweaks in punctuation.

*****************************************************************************************************************

He placed the book down and those ever-expressive eyes burned with what she supposed was anger. "I don't need a babysitter, despite what Leon told you."

Ah, so now we have it; his pride had been sorely nicked. "Good, because I don't want to be one. Listen, maybe we can work together here. I need this job." He didn't have to know it was because she needed to stay close to him and hopefully say something or do something that would influence him to want to live. "I have bills to pay," she added, "and you have a grueling schedule where you need to be on time, so allow me to assist you in doing that and we'll all go home happy at the end of the day."

He drummed his hand on the top book, which happened to be book one in the Harry Potter series. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the UK edition given to her by her brother. Who knew how widely popular the series would eventually become, and in 2007, she was anxiously waiting for the final book in the series to be released.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Will he take the deal or not? Find out next week.

It won’t work….

LOOKING FOR last week's SNIPPET from Chapter Two: Snippet #9

Now for Chapter 3  - Building Bridges Snippet #1

About this snippet: We're skipping ahead a few paragraphs.

Set up for this snippet: Bellamy shows up at Evie's room and invites himself in. His impromptu arrival has her curious. He inspects her things–her open suitcase for starters– and adds his opinions along with some clipped random questions. She knows there is a point to this visit. She just has to keep her cool and figure it out.

Now for the snippet. There are some tweaks in punctuation.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Looking over her reading material was far worse than him fondling her undergarments and her face heated. He placed his sunglasses on the top of his head. "You have quite the selection here," he said and turned to look at her and this time, his gaze had changed, not hostile, but curious. "You're a Buddhist?" he asked and picked up the book, Yoga: Meditation for the Mind, Body, and Soul.

"No," she said, "when I'm stressed, I like to meditate and some of the yoga poses help me to relax."

"Hmm...maybe you are my type after all. I'd like to see you do some of those yoga poses...naked, preferably." The lustful gleam in his eyes made her blush, but she refused to fall victim to this game he was obviously playing. Then she realized his motive; he was purposely trying to make her feel uncomfortable.

"It won't work," she said and he arched a brow at her.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Caught. Wonder what Bellamy will say next.

Sneak Peek...
Her gaze landed once more on the letters printed on the door, stating roof access and the implications of Bellamy being up here registered as a warning bell in her mind. Dear Lord, why had they allowed such a thing in his unstable condition? Then she realized the band didn't suspect he was suicidal. They believed he had a drug and alcohol problem he was trying to kick.

Leon opened the door and they took a flight of stairs to another door and opened it. The bright sunlight blinded her at first until her vision adjusted. She spotted Bellamy standing on the ledge a few feet in front of her. Fear rose up inside of her like a tangible force that urged her to go to his rescue. Her legs carried her swiftly and her hands grabbed his dress shirt with some kind of wild print on it, and she yanked him toward her.

Bellamy's hands flew out in front of him as if to grab onto something to steady his fall. "What the–" Her cry of alarm muffled Bellamy's curse when she realized he was going to land on top of her, but at the last millisecond, Bellamy twisted, grabbing hold of her as he fell onto his back with her sprawled on top of him in an unseemly manner. Her hair had come loose from the knot at the back of her neck. Her glasses were askew on her nose and she tried to adjust them as she pulled on her blouse, which had risen above her waste. Bellamy's hot hands were on her flesh and for a moment she'd forgotten to breathe. She met his startled gaze and his lips pursed into a fine line.

"What is wrong with you, lady?" he said and shoved her away, not exactly rough but with a purpose to be as far away as possible from her.

She sat in a heap next to him, feeling a bit deflated that he didn't appreciate her attempt to help. "I was saving you," she said and lifted her chin.

"Saving me? Lady, you almost sent me tumbling over the edge."

"I most certainly did not," she sputtered. "And what were you doing up there, anyway? Who stands on a ledge and not think: Hey, I might fall to my death." She rolled her eyes and that seemed to set him off.

His nostrils flared and he looked like he wanted to say more on the matter, but then he turned toward Leon, who stood there with his arms folded against his chest and his lips appeared to be twitching as if he were holding back a full out smile.

"You need to fire the security guard," Bellamy stated, "that allowed this crazy broad up here." He flew to his feet and brushed off his white pants that were smudged with dirt from the gravel rooftop. He flipped his curly hair away from his bright and beautiful blue eyes. God, he was handsome. A lean five-foot-ten, he appeared taller than he truly was, or maybe it was because she was still sprawled at his feet.

Leon cleared his throat. "Bellamy, I want you to meet your personal assistant."

It took Bellamy a moment to realize what Leon meant, and then he shook his head. "No. Absolutely, no." He narrowed his eyes on her, and she scrambled to her feet as graceful as she could, considering how she ended up there.

"I'm Evie Reid." She extended her hand.

He stared at her outstretched palm for a second then leveled his gaze on Leon. "I don't need a personal assistant, and especially one who thinks attacking a person is a great tactic to get to know each other." He turned on his heels, and murmured something in Romanian, which she knew he spoke since his parents were both from there. She loosely translated it as Crazy chicks are not my thing.

"Well yeah," she shouted back. Then decided to play his game and spoke in Romanian too. "Good thing I'm not crazy then." Loosely translated of course, but that seemed to catch his attention for about a second. He turned around and met her gaze in what she believed was supposed to intimidate her, but she refused to look away. "Giving me the evil eye doesn't work." She stared back and he dropped his gaze first.

He harrumphed and grumbled something that she was sure hadn't been flattering, and continued on his way to the door that would lead him back inside the hotel.

"Well, that went splendidly," she muttered. "Why was he up here anyway?"

"Sorry, should have warned you. It's his thing. When we're about to begin a tour, he heads for the roof of the first hotel we stay at, to meditate and put him in the right mindset, or so he says." His shoulders lifted in a shrug. "For good luck, I guess," he added.

"And I just messed that up."

"Don't worry, I have hope he'll warm up to you. You did speak Romanian to him, right? Usually, he's thrilled."

Maybe, she thought, but not if he believed she was crazy.

Q&A

Q. Where did the idea for this book come from?
A. My daughter and I watched INXS live at Wembley on TV. We were sad to think the lead singer, Michael Hutchence, had died so tragically and there would never be another song written by him. The time travel tale about Bellamy Lovel took root, but I wanted a happier ending for my rock star and sent Evie back in time to try and save him.

Q. What draws you to this genre?
A. No one knows for sure if time travel is possible, but authors have sent their heroes and heroines to the past and to the future with one stroke of a pen. The idea of time travel has always intrigued me with the question of “what if?” The possibilities are endless.
