“Are the dreams a warning then?” she asked her reflection in the mirror then shook her head. “Stop it, Briar or you’ll end up like your father—seeing omens at every turn.” She grabbed the item in question and tossed them into her purse. She had to hurry if she were to sneak out of the house before her father decided to drag himself out of bed. She wanted to avoid any last-minute confrontations. Her father made it perfectly clear he didn’t want her to go to New Orleans. Too bad for him. He forfeited the estate when he refused it and now the deed fell to her.

The woman continued down the hallway halting in front of one of the rooms and opened the door. Briar scooted in quickly behind her afraid to be shut out if her dream didn’t allow her to open the door and follow. The woman peeked once more into the hall then closed the door and leaned against the hard wood, her chest rising and falling as if frightened or out breath.
