It’s all about the music… Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet: WIP from Heart and Soul. This is a snippet from my new 'rock star romance' that I'm working on. It's in the very early stages.

Last week: Rowan might have overreacted when she caught an older man staring at her. πŸ™‚

"I'm good," she reassured him and left his side before he could question her further. She weaved her way to the back room. She was about to close the door but came up short when she found George Herman standing there. She hesitated for a split second in her debate to shut the door in the man's face but recovered quickly and stepped aside to let the man enter. He took a seat at a back table and placed his coffee mug down. He didn't look at her, but she had a distinct feeling he was acutely aware of her every move.

Fortunately, she had no time to dwell on it since the band had taken the stage. The lights dimmed in the room, and only the stage remained bathed in light. Music always held some sort of enchantment over her. The blues, rock, punk and even some classical music could spellbind her to leave the world and her troubles behind. Music was her soul.

About Heart and Soul...

80s rock star, Haley Rose went missing without a trace on October 31 1988 and was eventually presumed dead. Three decades later, a thirty-year old woman, Rowan Beckett recalls things only Haley Rose would know and she can belt out songs in the same fashion as the missing 80s star. However, Rowan couldn't be the missing rock star since the woman would now be in her fifties. Could Haley Rose have came back reincarnated as Rowan Beckett?

  1. interesting snippet. it’s so true about music and the effect it can have on someone – calming, relaxing and so much more!

  2. “. . . even some classical music”? LOL. As a symphonic oboist who’s off to play a concert in an hour, I’m glad to hear it. πŸ˜‰

Although I like much rock, especially from my youth. this brought to mind one of my beefs with the genre. (Although this is quite tangential to your snippet and isn’t at all directed at your stories, which I always find interesting.) When rock came along, it wasn’t content with being good in its own right, its proponents had to actively disparage other types of music, at least back in the 60s and 70s. Any kind of music other than rock was snooty and actively to be avoided — rock wasn’t just music, but identity. Until rock came along, it wasn’t like that. In the 50s, classical selections like the Saber Dance could make Top Ten lists, and one of the biggest record seller in the 40’s was Prokofiev. The advent of rock changed that. Ahem. I’ll dismount my soapbox now. And I agree with your character: music is my soul.

    1. Hope your concert went well. πŸ™‚

You’ll find that Rowan isn’t at all snooty when it comes to music- rock or not. πŸ™‚
Couldn’t imagine a world without music. Live music is the best.
      Hope your concert went well.
