The woman stared in his direction, or at least it seemed like she did before she disappeared. He blinked and tried to rationalize what he witnessed. Maybe there was a path or something. Surely, the woman had not vanished.

“Gather around,” Jared called to them and waved his hands for the group to draw near. “The water park opened in 1983, a tourist attraction people sought to keep cool during the summer,” he began the ghost story with a bit of history. “Unfortunately, in 1987, the fun stopped for Tina Easton when the teen suffered a seizure. Before anyone realized what had happened to her, the girl was floating at the bottom of the pool.”

As they came to the end of the dirt road, a fence blocked their entrance to the water park. Of course, it wouldn’t stop anyone from jumping it if they had an inkling to do so. Luckily, they didn’t have to resort to calisthenics; Jared had the key and opened the lock.
“Make sure you wait for me at the concession stand up ahead. I don’t want anyone wandering off until I turn on the lights.”

“What is it?”
“Spike is going to school, too. He wants to be a chef.”
“A chef?” He lifted a brow as he tried to imagine tattooed biker-guy in the kitchen whipping up a soufflĂ©.

“Right after your father died, you would come in here and stare at this beat-up old thing. I would ask you what you were doing.” She glanced over her shoulder at her. “Do you remember what you said?”

“Good night,” he called back as his cook headed out the back door. He turned to Rowan. “I’ll walk you to your door if you’re heading upstairs.” He didn’t know if she had other plans for the night.
In his early twenties, he’d just be heading out to start his night. Some of the clubs didn’t get started until after ten. Maybe she was a night owl and the evening was still young for her.
“And there they are now,” she murmured as she spotted the band members at their van unloading equipment.
