It’s Read an E-Book Week!

1935-ebook-smEver wonder where the idea of the E-Reader first started?

The technology was first designed in 1935 and the invention was featured in the April 1935 edition of “Everyday Science and Mechanic’. How would you like to cart that around?

What do you think? Does it seem like they were trying to involve TV with a little light reading? Yep, and it's men friendly. See the remote control? lol

Almost 80 years later and we finally have the E-Reader in our hands. I don’t leave home without mine.IMG_1912

IMG_1906I personally love my Kindle Fire HD. I'll just touch on a few of the features I enjoy.
1. It's in color!
2. I can view the book covers on a virtual shelf for easy access in finding my next read. You have a choice of viewing by author or by title, too.
3. I have access to the Internet. (Facebook, Audible, etc)
4. There's the "text-to-speech" feature I use a lot while I'm driving to and from work.

There are many more features, but those are my favorites. What E-Reader do you like the best and why?

  1. Some day I will move up to the Kindle Fire. I have the Kindle touch. Not a bad ereader. Fairly user friendly. Easy to read the books. One thing I wish it had was color. and it’s a bit different from the regular kindle which I had first.

  2. Love this post!
Glory Road by Robert A. Heinlein was first published in 1963. I read it in 1993 and was amazed that his futuristic world included electronic reading tablets–this was at a time before PC’s were in every home and the cost of laptops were prohibited to most folks I knew, but Heinlein created a futuristic world where much of his science fiction technology is now science fact. His descriptions of the light reading tablets in his books may not accurately describe real e-readers of today, but they were amazingly close. Now, when is someone going to invent flying cars like the ones in Back to the Future? lol!

  3. While I love my kindle, I am now a little disappointed in it. I have the basic kindle, no colour and no light. Of course the portability of hundreds of books at one time is wonderful. When I bought this I used points to get it and it was the only one this store carried…but free is always good. I would LOVE to have one with a back light; colour I can live without. But what I really miss are page numbers. When I’m 50% thru my book, I’d like to know if that is 50% of 60 or 50% of 300.

  4. Karen–I love my Kindle Fire HD, too!The early one was a real contraption, wasn’t it? Who knew?

  5. Karen,
I still prefer a print as opposed to an e-reader, but probably have to bow to technology one of these days. I have to admit, it doesn’t take up space like a print book does.

    1. Ilona,

I won’t give up my print books, but the Kindle is really convenient and I like being able to have the book immediately. I can be a tad bit impatient. lol

  6. I carry a big purse, but that original e-reader would never fit. I’m still using my old keyboard kindle. My husband has a kindle fire and never uses it. I’m so green with envy. Thanks for the free read info.

  7. Wow, who knew that the idea had been around so long?
I have a Kindle, which suits my needs, but I’m always hankering for the next gadget. Maybe I’ll reward myself with a Kindle Fire if my next royalty check is big enough.

  8. I have a Kindle keyboard, which I use for text-to-speech because as far as I know, my Kindle Fire doesn’t have it. At least, not that I’ve ever found. Clue me in???

Okay, I admit that I bopped over here to see if you got it right about ereaders, and sure enough, you did. 🙂 I figured so, knowing you. LOL. I’m glad we finally have viable options for ereaders that we can actually carry around! I can’t read print books at all so it’s ebooks all the way for me.

    1. Jacquie,
The Kindle Fire doesn’t have the text-to-speech, but the Kindle Fire HD does. Go figure. I have no idea why Amazon decided to do away with the text-to-speech on the Kindle Fire.

lol- You thought I didn’t know about the first e-reader.

So glad you can enjoy books with your Kindle. Text-to-speech is wonderful. Now if they can just figure out how to make the voice sound like Sean Connery. lol

  9. I had no idea the concept of an e-reader went back that far. I wonder what they would think of our gadgets today, LOL. I started with an original Kindle (loved it), then went to the Kindle Fire (love it) and now I also have an iPad Mini. I still mainly use my Kindle Fire for reading, but the iPad Mini is great for reading in bright sunlight outdoors. I still enjoy the feel of a paperback novel, but I love my e-readers. When it comes to a non-fiction book though, that I want to mark up and highlight, I always go with a print copy.

Thanks for sharing, Karen! BTW, I love the cover for THE SPIRIT OF LOVE. Off to download it now! 🙂

    1. Hi Mae,

Thanks for coming by. I’m so glad you like the cover for The Spirit of Love. I was pleased with it, too. 🙂 That is the Queen Mary in the background. It’s where the story takes place. 🙂

I had wondered what the difference is with the IPad Mini. So you can read in bright sunlight. That would be a plus. Another gadget for the future. 🙂

I hope you enjoy The Spirit of Love.
Thanks again for stopping by and sharing.
