Setup of the scene...

Michaela and Alan had a moment and now she doesn't want him to leave. When Hyatt asks Alan to join them in a game of darts, Alan is about to refuse. What's a girl to do? Hmm... Michaela is speaking first.

“No, he’s chicken,” she said, challenging him.

Hyatt hooted with laughter and asked, “Ye goin’ to let a lassie call ye chicken?”

Alan’s eyelids closed and opened with a slow deliberate blink of irritation, but he stood. She held out her hand, offering him a dart, and he yanked it from her, determination stamped on his face. “Stand aside.” He glanced at her with his eyes flickering to a darker shade of blue. “Let me show ye how it’s done.”

Michaela waved her hand in front of her. “Be my guest.”

  1. “Let me show you how it’s done” is a dangerous statement to make!

According to the Laws of Narrative, he’s either going to shine . . . or fail spectacularly. 😀

It’s nice to see how relaxed Michaela is—and she sure has his number, doesn’t she?

  2. Oh my goodness, that’s some personal tension! Really neat excerpt. I like how Hyatt interacts with Michaela and Alan, too. These people all seem very real.
