Clarity Shaw visits the Tempest Gate Hotel in Salem, New Hampshire in the hopes of getting the scoop on the reported phenomenon, which occurs every Halloween at the abandoned graveyard nearby.  She’s an investigative reporter for the magazine Unbelievable Finds, which specializes in paranormal findings.  Supposedly, every year on Halloween night, the statue of Archangel Michael and the marble “Devil’s Chair” transform into the corporal bodies of Michael Davenport and Samael Fenton.  One more time they will fight to the death for the love a woman named Mary Peabody.

Clarity has heard the harrowing reports of people who have ventured into the cemetery on Halloween night and never made it out alive, or if they do get out alive, they are altered forever.  On a trip to capture the Devil’s Chair and statue of the angel with her camera, Clarity finds she has stayed at the cemetery as night closes in - and she’s not alone.  Not only do the spirits return in their human form but they are accompanied by a ghost and a witch.  Now locked in the cemetery, Clarity may not make it out alive as the lethal struggle begins once again.

Nothing like a night trip to an abandoned graveyard on Halloween to make one’s spine tingle.  Throw in a lethal curse and The Curse of Tempest Gate becomes the perfect campfire tale.  Although some aspects of the story are predictable, Karen Michelle Nutt brings urgency to the story which made me want to keep turning the pages.  I loved the history Ms. Nutt added at the end of the story about the Devil’s Chair and the details behind her delightful tale of terror and justice.  The Curse of Tempest Gate is the perfect story to read on a stormy night.
