Twirl and Dip #SnipSun #snippetsunday

Drake's mother, Mary Tennyson, a four-foot-eleven woman who only had a few strands of gray hair on her head, and she was pushing fifty-seven, thought the world's problems could be saved with a proper meal. Drake's father on the other hand believed a hard day's work could set anyone straight. Maybe they were both right, but at this moment Drake was glad his mother had prepared a full breakfast before he faced Eastyn.

Standing on the ladder, he reached for the screwdriver. He'd have to take the faulty sign down to work on it. Neon sign tubing could be tricky.

As first meetings go—when one has been the biggest jerk in the world— it hadn't gone as bad as he imagined. Eastyn hadn't yelled nor threw anything at him; however, she did accuse him of hiding which made him sound like a wuss. Not exactly a flattering observation. He would have rather she bopped him one.

(A few more sentences)

"She's right," he grumbled under his breath. Hadn't he made it clear to his parents he didn't want to talk to any of the bandmembers or Sully, his manager if any of them called the house asking for him? If that didn't sound like someone was hiding, he didn't know what else would, and Eastyn had picked up on it right away. He didn't know if he should be glad that she still knew him so well or annoyed that he apparently was an open book.

Possible Blurb:

Eastyn has her soda shop to run and specialty ice creams to create. Only the place is falling apart, and she may have a haunted jukebox that chooses songs to communicate. If things couldn't get any more complicated, Drake, her ex-fiancé, returns home after five years on the road with his rock band, Never Mind the Damage.

Eastyn vows not to fall for Drake's charms again, but when you have a lifetime of memories with the man, the heart seems not to care about pledges. Her haunted jukebox believes choosing the right song to twirl and dip to is the answer to everything. However, Eastyn isn't convinced. She wants to know if Drake is home for good, or will he break her heart all over again?

  1. I love that bit about his parents. A good meal and a hard day’s work could very likely solve a lot of the world’s problems. 😀 Maybe he should invite Eastyn over for a proper meal…

  2. I’m glad to see him doing some self reflection here! It’s sorely needed…minor nit (since this is still a WIP, right?): This made me visualize her as nearly bald LOL: “who only had a few strands of gray hair on her head”. Maybe if it read additionally as “mixed in with her brunette curls…” or pick a color? Just a thought. Enjoyed the excerpt – I always enjoy your stories!

  3. Well, at least he’s had this moment of self-realization. The question is, will he do something to change it and stop hiding from the woman he needs to face? Great snippet!

  4. Interesting observation about his parents. He’s wary, knows he dun-her-wrong, but is willing to take a chance. He has possibilities as a hero.

  5. I enjoyed the insights into his mind. His situation, going from a rock star to a handyman made me quite curious about his thoughts and feelings.

  6. What exactly is he running/hiding from? And was he running from her? If so, why is he back there? Maybe it’s himself he’s trying to run from.
