Set up for this week: We're jumping ahead a few paragraphs in this snippet. JoBeth is behind bars and was asleep, but Jace woke her up.Β  It's late and he wants to go home for supper. He opens the cell door, but then halts when he realizes JoBeth seems frightened...

"Aren't you hungry?" he asked carefully. Her defensive stance made him wonder what abuse she'd endured at the hands of the deputies who brought her here.

Her brows drew together and she licked her lips before her eyes hardened with suspicion. "I don't see no tray with you."

"Well, no ma'am, I don't suppose you do. Supper is waiting for us back at the house."

"Your house?" she asked in disbelief.

Her look of surprise almost made him chuckle again, but then he realized this woman, this outlaw hadn't been treated with kindness. Of course she'd be suspicious of his actions. "I don't see the sense in traipsing all the way to my house and bringing you back your supper later when it tastes a whole lot better when it's nice and hot."

Jace wants to take her home for supper. Find out next week what JoBeth thinks of that.
Hope you enjoyed the snippet of WANTED.

Until next week, take care.

Wanted_2015_mediumAbout the Book:

Sheriff Jace Kelly's wife died birthing his remarkable daughter, Emma. She inherited the families' seer abilities. At six years old, she can't tell the difference between a vision and an ordinary dream. So Jace doesn't put much faith in Emma's recent premonition: marriage for him and a new mother for her.

When JoBeth Riley arrives, Emma is convinced she's the woman in her dream: dark hair, green eyes, and shamrocks in her pocket. There's one problem – she's the notorious outlaw, Baby Face Jo. Her stay in town is meant to keep Shane Maverick, the leader of the outlaw gang, from finding her before the authorities devise a plan to capture him.

JoBeth finds the Kellys a strange lot. A little girl, who believes her dreams are tales of the future and the rugged sheriff whose kindness proves a distraction. She's an outlaw, for heaven's sake, but Jace is bound and determined to steal her heart.

  1. Such great writing, Karen. You brought these characters to life. Wonderful book! The premise was outstanding. And I really liked the ending!

  2. Damn, he’s one of a kind. I’m really liking him!
But, yes, I’m with PT … what about her escaping?

  3. He’s taking a big risk here, and I think she understands that more than he does. But that’s only because she’s still looking for the bad.

  4. Good snippet. I’m enjoying the way you’ve moved things to the point where they can be around each other– on the same side of the bars!

  5. I just finished The Gryphon and His Thief. It was great, and this book is shaping up to be the same. I’m loving the sheriff.

  6. So sorry for the delayed response for this week. I’m playing catch up on Sunday Snippets.

I have to admit, wouldn’t he be worried an outlaw would try to escape by taking her home for supper? And how would his family react to him bringing an outlaw to supper? Her reaction does make me wonder what she might have suffered to be so cautious so suddenly. Great snippet.

    1. Daelyn,
You are right on all of accounts. She is cautious. She’s had a hard life on the run so she doesn’t trust easily. You will see more of this later on in the story.

As for the sheriff worrying about her coming home with him… He sees something more in her than just her being an outlaw. He’s always been a good judge of character, and not to mention his daughter believes JoBeth is the woman she dreamt about becoming her mother.(Mentioned in previous snippets.) He also will be keeping a keen eye on her. He’s not stupid, but he believes in giving a person the benefit of the doubt. We shall see if he’s correct to do so. πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for stopping by.
