A Change is Gonna Come. Twirl and Dip #8sunday #SnipSun #snippetsunday

Twirl and Dip is a WIP story (very early stages) Eastyn's POV

Once she gave Jack all the details of what needed to be repaired, she ended to call feeling like her life was about to turn around for her. It was then that she realized the jukebox played an Otis Redding song, A Change is Gonna Come.

She found the turquoise and pink jukebox trimmed with gold at an antique shop on a road trip she took with her mother and her Aunt Janet. The owner claimed it was haunted. She laughed thinking he was joking but he didn't crack a smile.

"I have to disclose that fact before I sell it," he said.

She was pretty sure that was only if a house was haunted, but she really didn't know. "What makes you think it's haunted?" she asked.

"The previous owner said it plays songs at random."

It was probably just faulty wiring. She could have that fixed. "How much?"

(If you'd like to continue the scene...)

He sold it for half the price it was worth.

"It'll give Twirl and Dip extra charm," her Aunt Janet said as they left the antique shop. "Did you get a look at the selection of tunes. Those 45s alone are worth more than you paid for the jukebox. Haunted or not, if it plays songs at random, only great music will ever be heard."

"Can't go wrong with that," her mother chimed in.

Her lips curved at the memory of that vacation away from home and her decision to break it off with Drake.

Once the jukebox was delivered, she had it worked on, but everything checked out all right. There was no reason for it to pick records at random. Luckily, most of the time it remained silent waiting for a coin to be placed in the slot and buttons to be pressed for a selection, but when it did play on its own, she realized the records weren't random at all. They fit her mood or like now, it seemed to be voicing an opinion as if it wanted to speak to her, comfort her. Crazy. Maybe but she felt a peace and not spooked like a guardian angel was looking out for her. A Change is Gonna Come… She guessed the jukebox thought to call Jack was a good idea, too. The Twirl and Dip needed some changes to spruce it up. Yes, a change was a long time coming.

Possible Blurb:

Eastyn has her soda shop to run and specialty ice creams to create. Only the place is falling apart, and she may have a haunted jukebox that chooses songs to communicate. If things couldn't get any more complicated, Drake, her ex-fiancé, returns home after five years on the road with his rock band, Never Mind the Damage.

Eastyn vows not to fall for Drake's charms again, but when you have a lifetime of memories with the man, the heart seems not to care about pledges. Her haunted jukebox believes choosing the right song to twirl and dip to is the answer to everything. However, Eastyn isn't convinced. She wants to know if Drake is home for good, or will he break her heart all over again?

  1. Charmaine Gordon here, loving this snippet. I fear she will get in big trouble as the music doesn’t fit plus she is not in charge.

  2. I like the premise of the story – a haunted jukebox. Would like to know haunted by what kind of spirit. It seemed like A Change is
Going to Come was a premonition.

  3. If you can have a haunted house, why not a jukebox? It brought back memories of the old movie Herbie Rides Again, which had a haunted jukebox that communicated through choice of song titles.

  4. This reminds me of an old CD player I used to have. It had an option to listen to CDs or radio. I lived in an old house at the time and the radio cut into a baby monitor signal while I was listening to music. To note, there was no babies in the house so it must have been a neighbour but it creeped me out so much I never turned the radio on again (CDs from then on). But this jukebox seems less scary! Hope the change that’s coming is good!

  5. She thinks of the song as an omen, eh? That’s certainly in keeping with your other characters.

BTW, I read only the first 10. With 24 more people to get too, reading that much more is simply out of the question. Sorry.

  6. It sounds like a pretty good jukebox to box to me. At least it’s some company. I wonder what would happen if she changed the records.
