“I’m good,” she reassured him and left his side before he could question her further. She weaved her way to the back room. She was about to close the door but came up short when she found George Herman standing there. She hesitated for a split second in her debate to shut the door in the man’s face but recovered quickly and stepped aside to let the man enter. He took a seat at a back table and placed his coffee mug down. He settled back in his chair. He didn’t look at her, but she had a distinct feeling he was acutely aware of her standing there.

Even though he’d been polite the previous night, his intense stare unsettled her, but she couldn’t tear her gaze away. The sounds of polite conversation around her seemed to fade in the distance as she watched the man cup his a mug and slowly lift it to his lips, never entirely taking his gaze off her as he indulged.

She grabbed for the clipboard on the bar with the signup sheet for the Merry Mayhem Event and secured it to the wall where the nail had been hammered there for such purposes.

“Did you pick up any pumpkins?” Rowan asked as she turned toward Katie as if Maverick no longer existed.
“Of course. I planned on the two of us carving those babies up before we open tonight.”
“I’ll leave you two to it,” Maverick said and gathered the dishes on the bar. He had paperwork calling him anyway. His gaze took in the two women as they headed for the back door and his eyes fastened on the soft sway of Rowan’s hips.
